PLANNING FOR A FUTURE BEYOND 1.5°C

The World Meteorological Organisation estimates that there is a 66 % chance of global temperatures breaching the crucial 1.5°C threshold for at least a year, potentially as early as 2026. Working with business and legislators at COP28, NatureFinance highlighted the need to double down on minimising the rise in global temperatures, and simultaneously initiate unconventional measures to unlock radical innovation in the face of a world beyond 1.5°C.

Are existing business models, investment portfolios, and policies resilient in a post-1.5°C world? Where are the greatest points of vulnerability, and what are the barriers to radical change? How can actions and solutions developed for a post-1.5°C world prioritize and promote equity?

RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS EDUCATION

Business schools find themselves at a critical juncture, possessing both a remarkable opportunity and a moral obligation to cultivate leaders with a strong sense of social responsibility. Increasingly, students, employers, and faculty are urging these institutions to elevate their commitment to responsible business education across teaching, research, and operations. Criticism is mounting against curriculum content that adheres to the 'shareholder primacy' model and the pursuit of short-term returns rather than the long-term strategies needed to address issues such as inequality or climate change.

This discussion identifying the key levers to make responsible business education the new norm will be followed by the FT Sustainability Award Ceremony www.ft.com/rbe with:

  • Best overall business school with evidence of full integration and metrics around integrating responsible business education into teaching, research, student projects and operations
  • Best business school teaching cases, pedagogical resources and modules or courses produced in the last three years on sustainability or climate change adaptation — with a special focus on teaching sustainability in finance
  • Best business school academic research published in the past three years that addresses societal challenges, with evidence of positive impact on policy or practice

FROM LEARNING TO ACTION: BUSINESS FAMILIES DRIVING CHANGE

Many business owning families are increasingly looking to drive change and create positive impacts across their entire value chain. Whether via their businesses, investments, philanthropy or advocacy, leading families are exploring new approaches and rethinking how they measure success across
generations.
Many of these families are also setting up collaboration with other families, thereby facilitating resource sharing, expertise exchange, and larger, more impactful initiatives. As formal education on responsible ownership si still limited ni capacity and scope, this is a critical development that provides families with the opportunity to learn from each other.
In this session we will hear from a number of innovative business families who are working to create positive change at scale and discover how they help educate other families on their journeys.

WORKSHOP / GUIDEBOOK OF RESPONSIBLE REMUNERATION

CEOs and board members are increasingly expected to lead the change and contribute to a more sustainable economy. This requires making different corporate decisions. With corporate activities impacting billions of lives, executive remuneration has a critical role to play in the transition to a sustainable economy. The alignment of purpose, practice, performance, and pay is a key contributor to the change for good. Linking the ambitions (purpose) of a company with the actions taken (practice), the results realised (performance) and the way leadership is held accountable (pay), the GuideBook clarifies corporate commitment to sustainable long-term value creation.

To this end, and to advance the UN Global Compact SDGs, Reward Value together with InTent is launching the GuideBook of Responsible Remuneration. We all know why responsible executive remuneration is important but often still  face the challenges of implementing it.

A NEW GENERATIONAL CONTRACT FOR REGENERATIVE STRATEGIES

Fighting the climate and biodiversity crises and shifting towards regenerative economies will require much more than technical innovation. A paradigm shift in our beliefs, mental models and the timescales guiding organisations and policy institutions will be absolutely essential. Current leadership and decision-making structures need to adapt to the new realities facing us and not hinder progress.

The global youth movement for climate action has demonstrated this generation’s immense mobilising potential for change. We’ll find out how increasing age-diverse leadership and decision-making models can promote mutual learning and shore up strong commitment to long-term transformation.

WORKSHOP / WHY OWNERSHIP MATTERS?

More than ever before, in our increasingly polarised word, ownership matters. The values and motivations of owners play a key role in the direction their businesses take, yet the many types of ownership structures of companies and organisations are not often discussed or explored in detail. What does it mean to be a responsible owner today? And how do ownership characteristics and intentions influence the direction of an organization?

During this workshop participants will explore the different types of ownership and draw on their own experiences. The workshop will conclude with a discussion on why ownership matters and how organisations and society can benefit from it. You will leave having gained a deeper understanding of the notion of ownership and how ownership education can make an impact.

STRATEGIC BOARDROOM APPROACHES IN A FRAGMENTED WORLD

Faced with our current global crisis, companies in all sectors have a responsibility to boost their positive impact on the environment and society. The urgency is palpable, and addressing these issues requires  a seismic shift in boardroom strategies and operations.

How does a board deal with activists, how does it leverage value chain strategies, anticipate upcoming shifts in regulatory landscapes, and successfully navigate the complexities of science-driven economies? A highlight of this session will be when attendees publicly pledge their positive impact commitments. This will open the door  to collaborative dialogues that can potentially redefine the sustainability paradigm.

WORKSHOP / EXPLORING UNCHARTED TERRITORIES: REGENERATIVE RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

Many people assume that self-inflicted existential challenges such as climate change will be tackled by more research and innovation similar to what we have been developing in past decades. Yet, we have to question whether current R&I processes are effectively serving humanity and the ecosystems on which we depend, or rather contributing to a runaway course that will lead to more extractivism, exploitation of resources of all kinds, and increasing dehumanisation and disconnection.

So how can we catalyse the conditions for our economic processes to engage in a pathway towards regeneration by default? Ensuring science is at the service of equitable wellbeing on a healthy planet is one key way. This requires mobilising natural and social sciences, the humanities, artistic practices, modern science and ancient wisdom still alive in indigenous cultures. The endeavour is not less than a shift in the way that research and innovation interact with society today, across disciplines, cultures and generations.

HOW TO ACCELERATE AND SCALE NATURE-POSITIVE SOLUTIONS?

Nature loss and its disruptive impact, can be used to push for transition towards a world where business, society and nature prosper in harmony. To achieve a regenerative economy by 2030, we need to accelerate nature-positive solutions in collaboration with the private sector, foundations, family offices, investors as well as other stakeholders.

Together we will explore how nature-positive solutions can help the transition towards a more sustainable and regenerative future. We will examine which barriers may hinder the integration of nature-positive solutions in different industries and the best ways to overcome them. We will also draw inspiration from successful models of cross-sector partnership that have sped up the adoption of nature-positive solutions.

WORKSHOP / IMPACT MANAGEMENT: TOWARDS A NEW BUSINESS PARADIGM

Global challenges have put the spotlight on links between the economy, nature and society, highlighting the need for all enterprises, investors and financial institutions to operate in a sustainable manner. In practice, this means that all market actors need to manage their impacts on people and planet.

Under the umbrella of the Impact Management Platform, 19 of the world’s leading sustainability initiatives are collectively advocating for the widespread uptake of impact management. To enable this, they are building consensus on what impact management fundamentally is, and are creating  a coherent and interoperable system for managing impacts based on their leading standards and guidance.

TOWARDS A MORE SUSTAINABLE FINANCE AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE SYSTEM

In the wake of the COP28 Climate Summit Meeting and the Global Stocktake that showed greenhouse gas emissions continuing to rise and almost all nations falling far short of the emissions reductions required to avoid the worst effects of climate change, the potential to restructure the international trade system to provide sharper incentives for sustainable production and consumption offers a significant (and under-attended to) point of leverage for moving the global economy and business across all sectors onto a more sustainable trajectory.

Likewise, the finance world must be regeared to support the transition to a sustainable future with special emphasis on the innovation required to deliver capital to the developing world at the speed and scale required.

WORKSHOP / HOW THE NEW GENERATIONS ARE EDUCATING THEIR PARENTS ABOUT IMPACT

Pressing issues such as climate, sustainability, inclusion and transparency are still not being addressed by all parents nowadays. Increasingly there is a reversal of roles on these topics: the next generation is now actively teaching their parents and family members on why they matter and how we need more urgent action.

This shift is having a profound impact on conversations within families and on the choices made by individual family members. Educational institutions are also rapidly adapting their curriculum to be up-to-date on these topics,  hence creating a knowledge gap between generations.

This workshop provides insights on the ways education is changing inside and  outside of families and the impact it has on younger generations such as when they map their career paths and establish family values. Our conversation will also branch out into how business families are rethinking the way they run their businesses, their investments, their approaches to philanthropy and even how to use their voice to advocate for change.

Biodiversity credits are gaining momentum as one of the instruments that can help mobilize capital for biodiversity conservation and restoration. This emerging market is undergoing rapid developments and many initiatives are focusing on integrity and transparency to ensure the market can deliver on its potential. This session will bring together stakeholders from across sectors to take stock of the current state of the market and conduct a horizon scan to define the gaps and areas of development for the future viability and success of the market.

THE GROWING CASE FOR RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS EDUCATION

Many business schools are shifting their programmes to respond to global issues such as geopolitical conflict, de-globalisation, mineral scarcity and the climate crisis. This is a reflection of how important these issues are for business leaders. Traditionally, business education is rooted in a model approach with technical solutions, but should a new approach be considered to complement and assist in giving students the tools to solve the problems of today’s business landscape? How can schools strike the balance between traditional models as well as teaching and fostering leaders who value emotional intelligence and are concerned with the societal and environmental impact of their decisions?

This webinar, hosted by the Financial Times in partnership with InTent, will showcase the Responsible Business Awards 2024 winners, highlighting the exceptional work of teachers, researchers and students around social purpose. It will also examine practical, measurable examples and strategies to fortify responsible business practices while preparing for uncertainty as the standard.

SYSTEMIC INVESTING

Investing for impact has gained traction in recent years, as managers seek to achieve social and environmental targets through their commercial investing. A competitive advantage for some, a moral imperative for others, growing interest has spawned a broad field of practitioners, methods, and outcomes.

Systemic investing offers a multi-asset class and multi-dimensional lens for investing. It is inherently complex, but when armed with a strong theory of change and robust stakeholder group, it creates greater opportunities than mono-directional strategies.

In this session panelists will discuss the fundamental tenets of Systemic Investing, and through an interactive case study we will explore how joining up multiple areas of investment can unlock capital for sustainable and inclusive prosperity.

FROM CSR PROGRAMS TO STRATEGIC CORPORATE IMPACT: A VIRTUAL REALITY EXPERIENCE TO TRANSFORM SUPPLY CHAINS IN GHANA

Above and beyond profit, consumers today expect businesses to contribute to societal well-being and embody responsible commercial conduct. Most businesses tackle this expectation by investing in CSR programs. In this workshop, we explore how businesses can pursue societal and commercial goals through a virtual reality experience based on Kolo Nafaso’s CSR program for better shea sourcing, and see how the joint pursuit of societal and commercial goals can create a competitive advantage.

The Shea Seeds virtual reality experience will send participants on an immersive visit to rural Ghana, where shea collectors (women earning <$1.00/day) live and work. Participants will delve into the perspective of AAK, the largest buyer of raw shea in the world, as they identify the challenges the shea collectors face and explore an initial CSR program to impact shea collectors’ lives. Participants will confront how can a company like AAK move from CSR projects to sustainable supply chain models? How can they utilize ESG requirements to create sustainable impact at scale at origin?

NATURE POSITIVE STRATEGY: WHAT SHOULD YOUR SECTOR’S PRIORITY ACTIONS BE?

Faced with the intertwined challenges of climate change and nature loss, businesses urgently need to take action to transform and innovate their operations and value chain. While 83% of Fortune Global 500 companies have climate change targets, only 5% of companies have assessed their impacts on nature, with less than 1% understanding their dependencies. A robust nature strategy with sector-specific understanding is the foundation for companies to meaningfully contribute to halting and reversing nature loss by 2030.

In the lead-up to UNCBD COP16 in 2024, this session will mobilize business ambition, analyse the necessary element of a nature strategy, signpost available resources, and identify key barriers for implementation and uptake.
